Germany is renowned for its architectural innovation, blending rich historical heritage with cutting-edge design. For aspiring architects seeking to elevate their careers, the DAAD Germany Study Scholarships in Architecture offer an unparalleled opportunity. This prestigious programme provides financial support for postgraduate and continuing education in architecture-related fields at top German universities. Beyond funding, it fosters professional networking and cultural exchange, helping scholars broaden their perspectives and refine their craft in a global setting.

  • Architecture

Applicants must have obtained their degree before commencing their DAAD-funded studies in Germany.

  • A complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification (not applicable to undergraduate studies).

Exclusions:

  • Funding is not available for Master’s or postgraduate programmes that have already begun in Germany.

  • Study periods abroad during the scholarship tenure may be funded only if they are necessary for the programme and do not exceed specific durations (typically up to 25% of the scholarship period, with exceptions for joint/double-degree programmes).

  • Programmes must allocate a minimum number of Credit Points (CP) in design projects:

    • 120 CP programmes: at least 45 CP in Design/Projects

    • 90 CP programmes: at least 34 CP in Design/Projects

    • 60 CP programmes: at least 23 CP in Design/Projects

The programme also supports projects focusing on monument preservation and construction in existing buildings.

Duration of Funding

  • Complementary Studies (Non-Degree Programmes): One academic year.

Most scholarships commence on 1st October of the following year, with earlier starts possible if a German language course is required.

Application Process

  • Access the Official DAAD Website: Visit the DAAD scholarship portal to review the application guidelines.
  • Register on the Portal: Create an account to initiate the application process.
  • Fill Out the Application Form: Provide all necessary personal, academic, and professional details.
  • Gather and Upload Documents: Ensure all required documents are prepared in the specified format (e.g., PDF).
  • Submit Your Application: Double-check your details and submit the application before the deadline.
  • Await Selection Results: The selection committee will review applications, and shortlisted candidates will be notified.

Selection Process

Once applications are submitted via the DAAD portal, a multi-step selection process takes place:

  1. Formal Check – Ensures all eligibility criteria are met.

  2. Work Samples Submission – Applicants submit portfolios or work samples for evaluation.

  3. Final Selection – A committee of German university professors reviews applications and work samples. Selections are based on:

    • Artistic qualification and maturity

    • Quality of study plan and motivation letter

    • Consideration for equal opportunity aspects

Important Considerations

  • Admission to a university is not guaranteed by the scholarship. Applicants must apply separately and meet university-specific requirements, which may include entrance exams or interviews.

  • If a candidate is awarded a DAAD scholarship but does not gain admission to any listed universities, the scholarship will be revoked.

  • The DAAD does not cover tuition fees, so applicants must check individual university policies regarding tuition costs.
