Empowering Change: The FUSE Executive Fellowship for Public Service Leaders

The FUSE Executive Fellowship is a distinguished public service initiative by FUSE, a national nonprofit committed to enhancing the efficiency of local governments in fostering equitable communities. This program embeds experienced private-sector professionals in city and county agencies to lead projects that address racial disparities, improve public services, and drive systemic change. Since its inception in 2012, FUSE has executed over 400 projects across 58 governments in 26 states, impacting nearly one in ten Americans.

About the FUSE Executive Fellowship

Each FUSE Executive Fellowship is a one- to two-year, full-time engagement for professionals with at least 15 years of experience. Fellows are strategically placed within local government agencies to spearhead initiatives in key areas such as:

  • Workforce development

  • Housing and homelessness

  • Health and education

  • Justice reform

  • Climate resilience

FUSE collaborates closely with government partners and local stakeholders to define the scope of each project, ensuring that Fellows possess the expertise, leadership skills, and community connections necessary for success. Using human-centered design, cross-sector collaboration, and data-driven approaches, Fellows develop actionable roadmaps and oversee progress from implementation to completion.

Fellowship Structure and Support

FUSE Fellows join one of three annual cohorts—spring, summer, or fall—creating a collaborative network of professionals tackling complex challenges. Throughout the program, Fellows receive:

  • Multi-day convenings at the start, midpoint, and conclusion of the fellowship

  • Monthly peer meetings for sharing insights and addressing project challenges

  • Specialized workshops focused on racial equity and systemic change

  • Personalized coaching and mentorship from FUSE leadership and executive coaches

Impactful Projects and Responsibilities

Fellows focus on structural and systemic improvements that drive economic recovery and reduce disparities. Key issue areas include:

  • Affordable housing and homelessness solutions

  • Workforce training and access to living-wage jobs

  • Pandemic response and health equity initiatives

  • Education reform and digital access expansion

  • Public safety and justice system improvements

  • Climate resilience and green infrastructure development

At the executive level, Fellows work alongside senior government leaders, applying their skills in data analytics, operational enhancement, strategic planning, and coalition-building to drive meaningful change. Past projects include expanding affordable housing in Kansas City, KS, supporting small business development in Ft. Worth, TX, and coordinating equitable county services in Los Angeles County, CA.

Fellowship Funding and Eligibility

The fellowship is fully funded through government and philanthropic partnerships, covering aspects such as project design, recruitment, Fellow compensation, training, and ongoing support. FUSE collaborates with cities and counties serving populations of 150,000 or more, collectively impacting over 19 million people nationwide.
