Amnesty International is inviting applications for its 18-month, part-time Global Civic Space Fellowship, aimed at researching the shrinking civic space and documenting grassroots resistance strategies worldwide. This initiative is designed to support individuals committed to human rights, advocacy, and civic engagement by offering them a platform to conduct in-depth research and contribute to global discussions on resisting authoritarianism.
This fellowship is ideal for human rights defenders, activists, researchers, journalists, academics, and policy professionals with experience in civic space resistance. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to Amnesty International’s advocacy efforts while expanding their expertise in the field.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Proficiency in English (additional regional language skills are an advantage).
Experience in civic space resistance through academia, NGOs, journalism, law, policy, or grassroots activism.
Strong research and writing skills, with prior experience in human rights publications.
No formal academic qualifications are required.
Must have legal authorization to work in their chosen location.
Open to applicants from all countries.
Duration: 18 months (part-time engagement)
Location: Fully remote (no relocation required)
Stipend: USD 25,000 for the entire fellowship
Fellows will:
Research and analyze global civic space restrictions.
Develop recommendations and advocacy tools for civic space protection.
Publish blogs, opinion pieces, and reports.
Organize virtual, in-person, or hybrid meetings with activists and thought leaders.
Deliver a strategic think-piece to inform Amnesty International’s advocacy efforts.

Case studies or descriptions of past work on civic space issues.
A proposed research approach detailing structure and engagement plans.

Payments will be processed 30 days after receipt of a valid invoice, following the completion of agreed milestones.
