Uproot Project Fellowship for Climate Action: Empowering Underrepresented Journalists

The Uproot Project Fellowship is a unique initiative designed to amplify the voices of underrepresented journalists in the field of environmental reporting. Recognizing the need for fresh perspectives in climate storytelling, this fellowship provides essential funding and support to early-career journalists who wish to explore critical environmental issues through various media formats.

Fellowship Benefits and Structure

The program offers financial assistance to seven selected fellows each year, providing up to $2,000 to cover essential reporting costs, including travel and research expenses. Additionally, fellows can request support from Uproot in placing their stories with established media outlets.

Projects supported by the fellowship must align with one of the following themes:

  • Environmental Justice – Addressing how marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by environmental issues.

  • Climate Solutions – Exploring innovative approaches to mitigating climate change and its impacts.

  • Water, Food, & Culture – Examining the intersection of environmental sustainability and cultural traditions.

  • Science – Investigating the latest scientific research and advancements related to the environment.

Who Can Apply?

This fellowship is dedicated to helping early-career journalists establish themselves in environmental reporting. Eligible candidates include:

  • Journalists who are new to covering environmental and climate issues.

  • Freelancers without prior full-time newsroom experience.

  • Recent graduates from journalism programs.

  • Scientists with strong writing skills but without formal journalism training.

Applicants must also be members of The Uproot Project. Membership is free and open to those who meet the eligibility criteria.

Project and Budget Guidelines

Fellows are expected to produce in-depth stories in any media format—written articles, audio stories, video reports, photography, or multimedia projects. The reporting can take place locally or globally, focusing on underreported environmental topics with significant social impacts.

The fellowship funds must be utilized strictly for reporting expenses, such as:

  • Travel and accommodation costs for field reporting.

  • Fees for translation services, access to official records, and data analysis.

  • Data visualization and other research-related expenditures.

While new equipment purchases are discouraged, exceptions may be considered under special circumstances. The funds must be used within a year of receiving the fellowship, and projects should not be reimbursed for work already completed.

Application Deadline

Interested journalists must submit their applications by March 1, 11:59 PM ET. The application process requires a well-defined project proposal, showcasing the story’s relevance and anticipated impact.

A Stepping Stone for Aspiring Climate Journalists

The Uproot Project Fellowship is more than just financial support—it is a stepping stone for aspiring environmental journalists to make a lasting impact. Through this initiative, diverse voices can bring attention to the most pressing climate and environmental justice issues, bridging the gap between science, policy, and public awareness.
