Peking University Boya Postdoctoral Fellowship: A Prestigious Opportunity for Emerging Researchers

Peking University, originally established as the Imperial University of Peking in 1898, holds the distinction of being China’s first national comprehensive university. Over the years, it has evolved into a globally renowned institution excelling in both humanities and sciences.

The Boya Postdoctoral Fellowship, launched in 2016, is an initiative designed to attract exceptional young scholars from around the world to engage in advanced research at Peking University, located in Beijing, China. The fellowship provides an opportunity for postdoctoral researchers to excel in diverse academic fields, including natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, economics and business, information technology and engineering, as well as interdisciplinary studies.


Fellowship Benefits and Funding

For the 2025 academic year, up to 380 fellowships will be awarded to outstanding early-career postdoctoral researchers. Each fellowship spans a continuous period of 24 months and offers:

  • Annual pre-tax salary of 200,000 RMB

  • Social insurance, housing allowances, and additional benefits

  • A 60,000 RMB housing subsidy for those without access to postdoctoral housing

  • Potential additional financial support of 30,000 RMB, 60,000 RMB, or 90,000 RMB per year, based on academic excellence and supervisor evaluation

Additionally, postdocs with two years of research experience at Peking University can apply for senior research positions within the postdoctoral track.


Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The Boya Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to researchers of all nationalities who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be under 35 years old

  • Must have obtained a PhD within the past three years

  • Registered postdocs at Peking University can apply if their contract commencement/expiration date does not exceed six months from the application deadline

Selection is based on several key factors:

  • Educational background and academic achievements

  • Quality and feasibility of the proposed research project

  • Alignment of the research with Peking University’s academic strengths

  • Strength of recommendation letters

  • Commitment from a postdoctoral supervisor at Peking University

A compelling research proposal should demonstrate how the applicant’s project will leverage Peking University’s resources and contribute to academic advancement.


Application Process

Candidates must select a faculty member at Peking University as their postdoctoral supervisor and secure their written endorsement. The 2025 fellowship selection will be conducted in two rounds:

Round One (230 fellowships awarded)

  • Application period: January 1 – February 28, 2025

  • Preliminary evaluations: March 20, 2025

  • Final selection: Mid-April 2025

Round Two (150 fellowships awarded)

  • Application period: September 1 – October 10, 2025

  • Preliminary evaluations: November 10, 2025

  • Final selection: Late November 2025


Application Materials

All documents must be prepared in Chinese or English and include:

  • Application Form for Peking University Boya Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Endorsement letter from the prospective postdoctoral supervisor at Peking University

  • Two recommendation letters, including one from the applicant’s doctoral advisor, specifically addressing academic integrity

  • Additional supporting documents, if required


Submission Guidelines

Applicants must compile all materials into a single PDF file and submit it via email to the designated coordinator corresponding to their prospective supervisor’s school, department, institute, or center at Peking University.

Important Note: Incomplete applications will not be processed.
