Apply Now for the 2025 United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme: A Fully Funded Opportunity in The Hague

The United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme is now open for applications for the 2025 cohort. Hosted by the Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs, this prestigious fellowship offers advanced training in international law, delivered by top scholars and practitioners. The programme takes place at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands, providing participants with an unmatched opportunity to deepen their expertise in the field of international law.

About the Programme

The International Law Fellowship Programme is designed to enhance participants' knowledge of international law and the UN’s legal operations. The programme is open to government officials and international law scholars from developing countries and emerging economies. In 2025, the fellowship will accept up to 20 participants, who will attend a fully funded summer course running from June 30 to August 1, 2025. The entire course will be conducted in French.


Programme Structure

Participants will engage in lectures, seminars, and discussions led by renowned international law experts. The programme will cover various topics such as:

  • Introduction to International Law
  • Treaty Law
  • International Peace and Security
  • International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
  • Law of the Sea and Environmental Law
  • International Trade and Investment Law
  • Diplomatic and Consular Law
  • International Criminal Law

Additionally, fellows will participate in the Public International Law session at The Hague Academy of International Law, further enriching their learning.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a legal background with relevant experience in international law
  • Be proficient in French (spoken and written)
  • Be available to attend the full programme

Application Process

To apply, candidates must submit:

  1. A completed application form in French (typed, detailed, and signed)
  2. A Letter of Transmission from a senior official at their institution
  3. Proof of French language proficiency (e.g., diploma, language certificate, or work experience)

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be selected based on the following:

  • Professional qualifications and the relevance of the programme to their career
  • Geographical and gender diversity

The deadline for submitting applications is February 26, 2025. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
