The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) 2025 at INSAIT is now accepting applications! This prestigious program provides students with an exceptional opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research under the mentorship of leading faculty members.


About the Program

The SURF program at INSAIT is inspired by successful summer research programs at renowned institutions like MIT, Caltech, and ETH Zurich. This marks the third year of the program, following successful editions in 2023 and 2024. Participants will actively contribute to ongoing research projects within their groups and may even have the opportunity to co-author papers for top AI and computer science conferences.

Program Duration

The fellowship lasts between 8 to 12 weeks, with students expected to be in Sofia, Bulgaria for a minimum of 8 weeks. To ensure full participation in hands-on research and mentorship, remote participation is not allowed.


Financial Support

Selected students will receive the following support:

  • Monthly stipend of 1500 EUR for living expenses
  • Fully covered accommodation arranged by INSAIT
  • Travel expenses and visa assistance

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an accredited university's Bachelor’s degree program
  • Be studying a STEM discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering)
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 (out of 4.0) or equivalent in their institution’s grading system
  • Students from underrepresented communities in STEM are highly encouraged to apply

Application Process

Interested students should submit the following materials through the online application portal:

  • Current CV (in PDF format)
  • Unofficial transcript from their university (in PDF format)
  • A one-page motivation letter (in PDF format) explaining:
    • Why they are interested in the SURF program
    • Their research interests
    • Any prior research experience

Program Requirements

During the program, students will:

  • Collaborate with their mentor to develop a project plan at the beginning of the fellowship
  • Submit a final research report, structured as a conference paper
  • Present their research findings in the INSAIT seminar series
