Eligibility Criteria

  • Maintain postdoctoral status throughout the fellowship year.
  • Be a U.S.-born citizen, naturalized citizen, or permanent resident.
  • Be affiliated with a U.S.-based academic or research institution.
  • Conduct research within the U.S. in the fields of life sciences, physical/material sciences, engineering, technology, computer science, or mathematics.
  • Not hold a faculty position.
  • Commit to at least 20 hours of outreach activities to support women and girls in science, including mentoring, classroom visits, and other related events.
  • Be available to participate in the For Women in Science Awards Week during November 2025.

Selection Process

The selection process for the fellowship is rigorous and is carried out in two phases to ensure only the best candidates are chosen:

  1. Peer Review: Experienced scientists from the relevant fields evaluate applications based on their scientific merits.
  2. Jury Review: A panel of esteemed scientists selects five winners from the top-ranked applicants.

Evaluation Criteria

  3. Budget Proposal

    • The proposed budget should align with the research goals, with suggestions for how the funds will be used (e.g., tuition, conferences, lab supplies, equipment, outreach).
    • Up to 10% of the budget can support outreach activities.
  4. Community Service

    • Past Initiatives: The candidate should have demonstrated a commitment to supporting women and girls in STEM.
    • Future Impact: The proposed outreach initiatives should have the potential to make a significant difference in promoting STEM to women and girls.

Program Administration

The fellowship is managed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on behalf of L’Oréal USA. The AAAS oversees the application and peer-review process, processes fellowship payments, and manages agreements and reports.
