The UNA-USA Fellowship is highly competitive, and funding is limited, so applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements. While the fellowship provides a stipend, it is important to note that funding is not guaranteed and is based on the availability of funds as well as the applicant’s eligibility.

Benefits

Once accepted, fellows receive a stipend to cover living expenses for up to four months.

This stipend can be used for rent, utilities, transportation, or other personal needs, providing the financial support necessary to focus on your internship and gain invaluable experience in the world of international diplomacy.

  • Full-time internships: Up to $3,000 per month for up to four months.
  • Part-time internships: Up to $1,500 per month for up to four months.

The stipend only covers up to four months, regardless of internship duration.

Eligibility Requirements:

The UNA-USA Fellowship is designed for individuals who meet specific criteria. To apply, you must:

  1. Citizenship: Be a U.S. citizen.
  2. Education Level: Be either:
    • An undergraduate senior,
    • A recent graduate (within one year of obtaining a bachelor’s degree),
    • A first-year master’s student.
  3. Institutional Affiliation: Be affiliated with an accredited U.S.-based institution. Students attending universities outside the U.S. or holding foreign degrees are not eligible.
  4. Internship Secured: Confirm an unpaid internship with the United Nations or its affiliated agencies before applying.
  5. Financial Need: Demonstrate financial need to be considered for funding.

Caveats and Conditions:

  • Funding Availability: Stipends are not guaranteed and are based on available funds.
  • Competition: As this is a competitive fellowship, it’s highly recommended to apply as early as possible, at least one month prior to your internship's start date.
  • Exclusions: Family members of UN staff, UN Foundation staff, and UNA-USA staff are not eligible to apply.

Fellow Obligations:

Fellows must meet the following requirements throughout their internship:

  • Comply with internship rules and expectations.
  • Participate in periodic surveys and workshops organized by UNA-USA.
  • Publish at least one blog post sharing insights and reflections on their internship experience.
  • Help promote the UNA-USA Fellowship by hosting or participating in events like career workshops or panel discussions.
