The Utrecht Excellence Scholarship (UES) is a prestigious programme offered by Utrecht University in the Netherlands. It provides exceptional international students with the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in a wide range of fields. The scholarship is awarded for one to two years depending upon the duration of the degree program. (The scholarship will only be renewed for the second year if the student is making satisfactory progress).
Benefits of Utrecht Excellence Scholarship

- The tuition fee plus the income required for one year is linked to a residence permit for study as determined by the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service).
- The scholarship can be renewed for the second year of a two-year master’s program.

Eligibility criteria
- Required Language: English
- Eligible Countries: All World countries except European countries.
- Belong to the top 10% of your graduating class.
- Not holding a European Union passport and not being eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans.
- Have completed your secondary school and/or bachelor degree outside the Netherlands.
- Have applied for an international master’s program with a start date of 1 September 2025.
- Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa/residence permit.
- Failure to meet one or more of these criteria automatically means the student is not eligible for this scholarship.
Application process
The application process for the Utrecht Excellence Scholarship involves several steps:
- Apply for a Master’s Programme: First, applicants must apply for a Master’s programme at Utrecht University through the university’s online application portal.
- Submit a Scholarship Application: Once the application for admission is complete, students can apply for the UES by submitting a separate application form. This is done via the OSIRIS Online Application system.
- Provide Supporting Documents: These usually include academic transcripts, a motivation letter, a CV, proof of English language proficiency, and reference letters.
- Selection Criteria: Applicants are selected based on academic performance, the quality of their application, and the motivation for studying at Utrecht University.
