Are you passionate about sustainable development and eager to make a positive impact in your community? The University of Calgary’s SDG Youth Leadership Certificate is here to empower Canadian post-secondary students to become champions of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This free, fully online program provides participants with the tools, knowledge, and support to lead meaningful initiatives aligned with the SDGs.


Program Overview

  • Duration: February–April 2025
  • Format: Online SDG course (via SDG Academy) + Biweekly workshops
  • Eligibility: Students enrolled in Canadian post-secondary institutions
  • Capacity: 150 participants

Key Features

1. SDG Knowledge Building

Participants will choose a self-paced course from the SDG Academy, focusing on a specific SDG or sustainability topic. Biweekly discussions and reflections enhance comprehension and application of the knowledge gained.

2. Skill-Building Workshops

Six interactive workshops held every other Saturday feature expert speakers and cover topics like project management, grant writing, and youth entrepreneurship. These sessions equip participants with actionable skills for SDG leadership.

3. Action for Impact

Students are encouraged to implement their learnings through advocacy projects or community meetings, developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities while addressing real-world challenges.


Completion Requirements

To earn a certificate signed by Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, participants must:

  • Complete their selected SDG Academy course by April 30, 2025.
  • Attend at least 4 out of 6 skill-building workshops.

Participants will also gain access to over 2,000 SDG Academy courses, with an optional certificate of completion for a fee.


Workshop Schedule

The workshops are scheduled on Saturdays at 1 p.m. ET. Topics include:

  1. Project Management and Budgeting Essentials
  2. Youth Entrepreneurship and the SDGs
  3. Introduction to Systems Thinking
  4. Developing Collaboration and Partnerships for the SDGs
  5. Funding Action: Grant Writing Basics
  6. Tools for Changing Behaviour: Community-Based Social Marketing

Expected Time Commitment

  • Workshops: 1–2 hours per session
  • SDG Academy Course: 2–4 hours per week
