The ASTAR International Fellowship is designed to support post-doctoral researchers who have completed their PhD within the last four years. It provides funding for up to two years of overseas research training, helping scholars build a global perspective in their field of study. Upon completing their training, scholars are expected to return to Singapore to contribute to the ASTAR research community and enhance Singapore's scientific landscape.

What the Fellowship Offers

The A*STAR International Fellowship provides comprehensive financial support for the duration of the post-doctoral research:

  • Monthly Overseas Living Allowance: To cover living expenses during the fellowship period.
  • Sustenance Allowance: Includes CPF contributions (where applicable).
  • Annual Return Airfare: To cover travel costs for the scholar’s return to Singapore.
  • Other Allowances: Includes settling-in allowance, computer allowance, conference allowance, and annual personal insurance.

For Mid-Term AIF awardees, similar terms of support are provided, with retrospective payments for any compulsory fees incurred from the start of their training.


Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the A*STAR International Fellowship, applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements:

  • Nationality: Applicants must be Singaporean citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents (SPR). Exceptional foreigners with outstanding track records may be considered if they meet specific criteria and have obtained Singapore citizenship before the commencement of the fellowship.

  • Academic Requirements: Applicants must have completed a PhD within the last four years and possess an excellent publication record. For Mid-Term AIF applicants, they should already be enrolled in a top overseas university or lab and have their current supervisor as one of their referees.

  • Other Criteria: Applicants must not have existing bonds to any institution, and they should have applied or be applying for a post-doctoral position at a top overseas institution or laboratory. Those in the final stages of their PhD may apply, but the award is only confirmed upon conferral of the PhD degree.


Application Procedure

Please follow the following important steps to avail this scholarship:

  • Sign Up ” Create your own account”, then Enter your e-mail and Password, You will see the online application form.
  • Fill in the required application, then Submit.
  • After you have submitted all the required documents, your application will be reviewed and you may be requested to provide more information while we assess your application. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to attend psychometric test/s and at least two rounds of interviews. 
  • follow its instructions to finish all the required application procedures. 
  • Applicants must apply the system as requested within the application period 

Applicants are required to submit their applications online and will undergo two rounds of interviews if shortlisted. Only successful candidates will be notified via email.
