The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is an incredible opportunity for students from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK. Funded in partnership with the UK Department for International Development (DFID), this prestigious scholarship is designed to support individuals passionate about creating positive global change, especially in disaster management and related fields.
Key Facts
- Entry Date: Scholarships are available for courses starting in September 2025. Note that deferrals are not permitted.
- Eligible Course: MSc in Disaster Management at Bournemouth University (BU).
Benefits
Each scholarship offers the following benefits:
- Approved airfare from the scholar's home country to the UK and return at the end of the award (CSC will not cover costs for dependents or travel before the award is confirmed) – funded by the CSC.
- Full tuition fees covered by an agreement between the CSC and the UK university, with no liability for the scholar to pay any part of the tuition.
- A stipend (living allowance) of £1,378 per month, or £1,690 per month for those studying in the London metropolitan area (amounts based on current rates) – paid and funded by the university.
- A warm clothing allowance, if applicable – funded and paid by the university.
- A thesis grant for the costs of preparing a thesis or dissertation, if applicable – paid by the university, funded by the CSC.
- A study travel grant to cover the cost of study-related travel within the UK or abroad – paid by the university, funded by the CSC.
- A contribution towards the cost of a mandatory tuberculosis (TB) test required for visa applications (receipt required) – funded by the university, paid by the CSC.
- A child allowance of £590 per month for the first child, and £146 per month for the second and third children under the age of 16, if the scholar is widowed, divorced, or a single parent, and their children live with them in the UK.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a citizen of one of the eligible Commonwealth countries. (Visit the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships website for a complete list.)
- Hold a first-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent).
- Meet the English language proficiency requirements before the application deadline.
- Not currently reside or study in a developed country.
- Not have previously studied in a developed country.
Important Notes:
- Applicants for Postgraduate Diplomas are not eligible.
- Recipients cannot hold any other Bournemouth University scholarships.
Application Process and Important Dates

- Submit an Application for the Scholarship: Complete your application using the Commonwealth Commission’s online application system.
- Apply for MSc Disaster Management at Bournemouth University: To be considered for the scholarship, you must also apply for admission to the MSc Disaster Management program at BU.
