Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Academic Requirements:
    The fellowship is open to Ph.D. candidates who are expected to complete their dissertation by the end of the fellowship year. This is not a post-doctoral fellowship, so applicants must still be enrolled as PhD candidates.

  • Dissertation Requirements:
    Applicants must be working on a dissertation that is relevant to Business or Politics. The dissertation should make a significant contribution to existing scholarship.

  • Language Proficiency:
    The program requires proficiency in English.

  • Geographic Eligibility:
    This fellowship is open to applicants from all countries. Non-U.S. citizens are welcome to apply.

  • Conference Participation:
    All fellows are required to participate in two conferences (fall and spring) where they will present their research. Expenses for these conferences are covered.

  • Residence Requirements:
    While residence at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation is encouraged, it is not mandatory. However, for the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Dissertation Fellowship, residence is required.


Application Process

To apply for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship, applicants must submit the following materials:

  1. Applicant Information Sheet
    Complete the personal details form required for the application process.

  2. Project Description (1,200 words):
    Provide a detailed description of your dissertation or book project. Explain the thesis, how it contributes to or revises existing scholarship, and why you chose this specific topic.

  3. Op-Ed or Blog Post (750 words):
    Submit a published or sample op-ed (similar to those in the New York Times) or a blog post (similar to Slate.com) that applies a major finding from your research to a current public policy issue.

  4. Bibliography (3 pages):
    Provide a comprehensive bibliography of sources relevant to your research.

  5. Curriculum Vitae (2 pages):
    Submit an up-to-date CV highlighting your academic achievements, publications, and relevant experience.

  6. Writing Sample (40 pages maximum):
    Submit a chapter from your dissertation (with a one-page introduction) or an accepted/published journal article.

  7. Two Letters of Recommendation:
    One letter must be from your dissertation advisor. These letters must be submitted either directly through the application process or to the Selection Board at nationalfellows@jeffersonscholars.org.
