The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program is a prestigious fellowship offered by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, designed to support and empower journalists from around the world who are passionate about covering business, economic, and public policy issues. This unique program provides a select group of journalists the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of these topics, expand their professional networks, and gain access to the world-class resources at the University of Chicago.

This program was created to address the need for high-quality, informed journalism in economic and business reporting. By equipping journalists with the tools and knowledge they need to delve into complex issues, the Stigler Center aims to improve the standards of business journalism and foster a more informed public discourse.

Benefits

The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program offers the following benefits to participants:

Reimbursement for economy-class airfare to and from Chicago, as well as SEVIS and visa application fees
A $12,000 stipend* to cover living expenses during the 12-week residency
Training in business fundamentals at the Chicago Booth School of Business
Access to seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and other parts of the university
The chance to write for the ProMarket publication
Opportunities to collaborate with Booth faculty, students, and fellow participants
A designated study space for the duration of the program
A certificate of participation upon successful completion of the program

The stipend is subject to a tax withholding of up to 14% for international participants. Check your country’s tax treaty with the United States for specific details.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Required Languages: Proficient in English
Eligible Countries: All World Countries.
Working journalists who have some years of media experience.

Application Process

To apply for the program, please submit the following through our online application portal:

Resume/CV
Three Published News Articles
Provide copies of three published articles, ideally in English. If they are not in English, include both the original and a translation.
- For TV or radio journalists, submit links to video/audio files in a PDF or Word document, along with English transcriptions.
Personal Essays (500 words maximum each)
- Explain your interest in the program and what you aim to accomplish through it.
- Share your experience and interest in economics and political economy, and outline what you hope to learn in these fields.
Two Letters of Recommendation
Proof of English Proficiency (if applicable)
Non-native English speakers must submit proof of English proficiency unless they have a degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, or from an English-speaking country. Examples of acceptable proof include:
- Certificates or standardized test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, Cambridge, Duolingo, etc.)
- An English equivalency diploma or certificate from an accredited educational institution
- A letter from a manager confirming English proficiency if you have work experience in an English-speaking environment
