ASU has partnered with the Mastercard Foundation to create scholarship opportunities for African students who have a demonstrated track record of academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to giving back to their communities. This scholarship is specifically aimed at students interested in fields related to innovation and technology—two sectors crucial for Africa's economic development and transformation.
The programme provides full financial support for scholars, covering tuition fees, travel expenses, housing, meals, insurance, and other study-related costs. By removing financial barriers, the ASU Mastercard Foundation Scholarship allows scholars to focus entirely on their studies and personal growth.
Benefits
The Scholarship will cover the following:
- Costs incurred for visa application processing
- Costs incurred for English language tests
- Costs incurred for program application
- Airfare to and from Phoenix, Arizona
- Full tuition, books and fees
- Medical expenses
- On campus housing
- Participation in Scholarship programming
Awards are tenable for the duration of the graduate program of study.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must qualify academically for admission to the degree of their choice that includes English proficiency.
- Applicants must be a citizen of an African country committed to ethical leadership and demonstrated engagement in their community.
- Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 33 on or before the application deadline.
- Applicants must demonstrate a track record of leadership and service in their community.
- Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and ambitions that exceed one’s financial resources.
- Applicants must have earned an undergraduate degree conferred by July 2025.
- Applicants must not have started or completed other graduate or masters degrees before August 2025.
- Applicants must be able to live in Phoenix, Arizona for the duration of the program.
Application Process and Important Dates
The application process for the ASU Mastercard Foundation Scholarship is thorough and requires careful preparation. Here are the general steps:
- All applicants must apply for the scholarship first. If successful, they will then be assisted in the process of applying for admission to Arizona State University.
- Scholarship interviews will be conducted via video or phone call in November 2024.
- Final scholarship decisions will be made by late January 2025.
- Successful applicants will travel to Phoenix, Arizona, to join the program in August 2025.
- All applicants must read and understand the application guidance and eligibility criteria before submitting an application to avoid errors or incorrect information.
- Arizona State University and the Mastercard Foundation reserve the right to:
- Cancel incomplete and/or late applications.
- Make changes to the scholarship conditions.
- Decide not to award any scholarships if necessary.
- Admission to the academic program does not guarantee a scholarship award.
