Maynooth University, one of Ireland’s top-ranking universities, is renowned not only for academic excellence but also for its commitment to social responsibility and inclusivity. Among its many initiatives is the Maynooth University Sanctuary Award Scholarship, a unique program designed to provide educational opportunities to refugees and asylum seekers who face financial and social barriers in accessing higher education. This scholarship plays a crucial role in fostering a welcoming, supportive environment for those displaced from their home countries, helping them to rebuild their lives through education.
This Ireland scholarship is open to international protection applicants, refugees, and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection. The evidence of registration and status from the Department of Justice must also be provided to be considered.

Each scholarship will include:
- A fee waiver;
- A subsistence support pack to assist with travel, books and meals.
Eligibility Criteria
Scholarships are open to:
- international protection applicants in Ireland; and
- refugees, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection, and those with leave to remain in Ireland
Application Process and Important Dates
Applicants are required to apply for their course through the usual channels, as well as submitting the sanctuary scholarship application form.
Undergraduate
You need to follow these steps to apply for a Sanctuary Scholarship for an undergraduate course:
- You must apply to the Central Applications Office (CAO, www.cao.ie) for a Maynooth University undergraduate course via either the Leaving Certificate Route, FETAC route or the Mature Student Route.
- You must complete this online Sanctuary Scholarship Application Form by 5pm, 26th April 2024. The online form will close after this time and late applications will not be accepted.
Postgraduate
You need to follow these steps to apply for a Sanctuary Scholarship for a postgraduate course:
- Postgraduate applicants must apply through the Postgraduate Applications Centre (PAC) before applying to the Sanctuary Scholarship by 5pm, 26th April 2024. If you require a PAC fee waiver please complete this expression of interest form. You will then be sent an email with further instructions in relation to applying through the Postgraduate Applications Centre (PAC, www.pac.ie).
- You must complete this online Sanctuary Scholarship Application Form 2024 by 5pm, 26th April 2024. The online form will close after this time and late applications will not be accepted.
The deadline for the final scholarship application is 5pm, 26th April 2024.
