The New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship Program, established by the Australian government, is an exciting initiative that provides Australian undergraduate students with the opportunity to study and gain work experience in the Indo-Pacific region. This program, a hallmark of Australia's commitment to fostering regional relationships, aims to cultivate a generation of young Australians with a deep understanding of the cultural, economic, and political landscapes of the Indo-Pacific.


Benefits

The NCP Scholarship benefits may include:

  • Tuition for overseas study component of scholarship up to $10,000 per semester or $6,666 per trimester for a maximum of one Academic year
  • Up to $10,000 for language training
  • $3,000 scholarship allowance per month of Scholarship Term for a maximum of 19 months
  • $3,000 Travel Allowance
  • $3,000 Establishment Allowance
  • Up to $3,000 Mental Health Allowance
  • $1,000 Fellow Allowance
  • Dedicated Case Manager
  • Internship & Mentorship
  • Private Sector Sponsorship.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Not be a current or previous citizen or permanent resident of your proposed host location(s)
  • Have at least one semester of full-time study (at least 37.5 points) remaining in your University of Melbourne Bachelor Degree or Bachelor Honours Degree at the time of commencement of the program
  • Remain enrolled full-time in a Bachelor Degree or Bachelor Honours Degree at The University of Melbourne during your New Colombo Plan Scholarship
  • Be between 18 and 30 years of age (inclusive) for non-Indigenous applicants, or between 18 and 35 years of age (inclusive) for Indigenous applicants on 1 January of the year your Scholarship commences
  • Have achieved a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70% at the time of application to DFAT, which will include results for Semester 1, 2020. If you are borderline or under this average, you will not be nominated.
  • Not be a previous recipient of an NCP scholarship
  • Not be an employee of the branch of DFAT or the contractor that administers the NC

Application Process

  • University Nomination: Applicants must first be nominated by their home university. This involves an internal selection process, during which the university evaluates candidates’ academic performance, leadership qualities, and potential to benefit from the scholarship.

  • Submit an Online Application: After securing university nomination, applicants complete the online NCP Scholarship application. This application includes sections on personal information, academic background, proposed study plans, and internship interests.

  • Personal Statement: The application typically requires a personal statement where applicants articulate their interest in the Indo-Pacific region, their career goals, and how the NCP Scholarship aligns with their aspirations.

  • References: Applicants must provide references, often from professors or academic advisors, to support their application and demonstrate their suitability for the scholarship.

  • Interview Process: Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview. This is an opportunity to discuss their study plans, motivations, and how they plan to represent Australia as NCP scholars.

  • Final Selection and Notification: Successful candidates are notified of their selection and receive guidance on the next steps, including arranging travel, accommodations, and internships.
