Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship 2026, applicants must:

  • Hold citizenship in a country with diplomatic ties to Japan

  • Be born on or after April 2, 2001

  • Have completed or be expected to complete 12 years of schooling by March or August 2026

  • Be willing to learn Japanese and undertake studies in the Japanese language

  • Be physically and mentally fit to study abroad

  • Be available to arrive in Japan between April 1–7, 2026 (or Fall 2026 if placed directly into a program)
