Are you a professional looking to break into the world of AI policy? The AI Policy Fellowship 2025, hosted by the Institute for Advanced Policy Studies (IAPS), offers a unique, fully-funded opportunity to contribute to real-world AI policy discussions that influence national and global strategies.
Running from September 1 to November 21, 2025, this three-month fellowship is designed for individuals from diverse backgrounds — whether technical or policy-oriented — who are eager to enhance their hands-on policy skills in the context of advanced AI. The program is hosted both in-person in Washington, D.C. and remotely, with a mandatory two-week residency in D.C. from September 1–12.
Fellows will work alongside seasoned experts on high-stakes AI policy initiatives. These projects may explore areas such as:
AI’s national security implications
Government procurement and regulation of AI tools
CBRN risks posed by AI systems
Export control mechanisms
Evaluation frameworks for AI
Geopolitical and jurisdiction-specific considerations (U.S., U.K., E.U.)
Hardware policy and technical safeguards
Each fellow will co-design their project with a dedicated mentor, ensuring alignment with their goals and expertise. Whether crafting detailed policy memos, hosting events for key stakeholders, or responding to immediate policy needs, fellows will produce tangible, high-quality outputs to strengthen their professional portfolio.
The AI Policy Fellowship goes beyond short-term projects—it’s a launchpad for long-term careers in AI governance. Fellows will benefit from:
Weekly 1:1 career coaching with a Fellowship Coordinator
Direct mentorship and regular feedback from IAPS staff and researchers
Access to IAPS's broad professional network, unlocking opportunities in government, academia, and industry
Post-fellowship career transition support, including additional financial aid in some cases
Whether your destination is a public agency, research institution, or tech company, this program aims to equip you with the tools and relationships needed to make a meaningful impact in AI policy.
The program offers generous financial support to allow fellows to focus full-time on their work:
Senior Fellows: $22,000
Fellows: $15,000
Part-time options may be considered for outstanding applicants.
Applications are open to candidates of all backgrounds, including those from government, academia, think tanks, and the tech industry. The program accommodates a range of experience levels, offering both Fellow and Senior Fellow roles.
Whether you're deeply embedded in AI systems or bring policy expertise from another domain, the Fellowship welcomes your perspective.
